Russia has become the first country in sporting history to have its athletics team banned from an Olympic games because of doping offences, in an unprecedented ruling that will increase tensions between the Kremlin and the west.

The International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) said on Friday that Russia’s track and field athletes could not compete at the games in Rio de Janeiro in August, after Moscow failed to prove that its doping regime could ensure that athletes were clean from performance-enhancing drugs.
