As expected, the 1965 Shelby GT350R Prototype auctioned off by Mecum on Friday broke the record for the highest-priced Mustang ever sold. Known as the "Flying Mustang," this 1965 Shelby Mustang was oozing with provenance boasting the title of the first competition Shelby Mustang ever made, the first Shelby Mustang to be raced and the first Shelby Mustang to win. As such, it's no surprise the "most historically significant Shelby Mustang in the world" hammered for $3.5 million, which is $100,000 more than the Bullitt sold for earlier in the year.
