After losing a lease renewal with the owners of Burlington Arcade, which forced Daniel Bexfield to leave his premises there after 15 years, 2013 is turning out well for him, with his business in Fine Antique Silver and Objects of Vertu finding a new location near Covent Garden, at 5 Cecil Court; a neat cut through street between Charing Cross Road and St Martin’s Lane. The busy walking-street is filled with owner-occupied shops selling antiquarian books and maps, and art.

On the evening of 25 July, the official opening of his new shop was a relaxed affair yet grand in style. Over 100 guests gathered outside to hear a heartfelt welcome speech from Daniel. It was followed by a witty congratulatory speech from his friend and Cecil Court neighbour Fernando Peire, director of The Ivy, and widely recognised as ‘The Restaurant Inspector’ from the TV series.

It was Fernando who alerted Daniel that no.5 Cecil Court was about to become vacant and would be the perfect new location for his business. Daniel returned the favour to Fernando with a fabulous gift of Georgian silver given to him after the speeches.

With the ribbon cut formalities were over and the evening gathered pace with abundant glasses of champagne from generous sponsor Perrier Jouet plus a fabulous singer serenading the crowds.

Most noticeable during the evening was the astonishing footfall Cecil Court enjoys; probably far more than the less-travelled Burlington Arcade, soon, rumour has it, to become a Dubai-style shopping Mall.
