A shattered mountain painted by Bierstadt and the largest eruption in the last century in the continental United States shows signs of growth 500 meters taller.
Mount St Helens last showed a period of intense activity between the years 2004 and 2008, when a new lava dome appeared. The period of activity was not as devastating as the 1980 volcano eruption but plumes of lava and steam were seen at the surface. More terrifyingly, the volcanic unrest was responsible for the growth of a massive dome around Mount St Helens’ peak. The volcanic dome grew uninterrupted between late September 2004 and 2008, due to scorching magma pushing to the surface.
